The reason I wrote this answer is not to ask you start eating dogs tonight, rather I’m writing this to protect our rights to EAT. I think we should ban eating a species if there’s a scientific reason such as the species is getting wiped out from the world.

Banning eating something because of personal preferences is not ok for me. If you banned eating something today because you don’t like eating it for your personal reason, people can ban your favorite food tomorrow because of their personal preference.

I don’t want my rights of eating beef, pork, fish and anything I enjoyed to be taken away because the personal preference of someone, just like how you would not like to see that happen to you. I’m standing up and speaking for their rights to eat dogs while being a dog lover, so I won’t be seeing some pig lovers or haters illegalizing pork away from my dinner table.

One of the things that bothers me a lot in the US is people's curiosity of what Chinese people eat. Got asked if I eat dog or cat is not news.

If you are one of the people who are curious, here is the answer:

We don't consider a specific species for a specific usage, and we don't eat pets.

We don't feel hungry when we see a dog and start eating them as soon as we see one, even people who love eating them will not react like that, they will just be like what you will react when you see a chicken or cow.

We know the difference between food animals and pet animals.

We think all the species are equal except human are supreme, therefore there are no "jobs" for a specific kind of animal, such as horses for riding, pigs for food, dogs & cat for pets.

So there's no such thing as you can't keep a chicken as a pet (I had lol), or you can't eat a horse because they are for riding.

According to this ideology, there's no problem if you want to eat your chicken or pet your chicken, or even ride your chicken if you can.

So when a dog, cat, chicken, cow, sheep or whatever you pick is used as a pet, we don't eat them. But when a dog, cat, chicken, cow, sheep or whatever you pick is used as a food supply, you eat it, because that's the reason you are keeping a animal for food.

It's not like we have special preferences to eat cute animals and pets, we just eat whatever is kept for food supply, it could be anything.

It's pretty funny to see how pet animals are so protected while food animals are having a horrible life in the US.

I mean, they are all animals, why are people being so "speciesist" and treating them so differently?

I'm surprised that the most viewed/upvoted answer doesn't answer the question at all.

While it is true that every culture has its own values and norms there is no arguing that the Chinese (and many other Southeast Asian nations) do in fact eat dog meat. The real answer has more to do with overpopulation and scarcity. This has long been practiced in China as harvesting dog meat doesn't require farmland or grazing fields, just dogs.

Today, it has more to do with scarcity of other meats or rather the price of other meats; it also surprisingly has a lot to do with politics. After the outbreak of bird flu in Asia, many large urban centers in China and throughout Asia passed laws banning the butchering of birds like duck or chicken within the city limits. This led to people harvesting bird meat in the countryside and shipping it into the city, which inflated the price considerably. This ban did not mention butchering dogs for meat as they weren't carriers for bird flu. So because the price of duck and chicken skyrocketed during this ban, the price of dog meat remained quite low. Also think of your average neighborhood, there aren't many ducks, chickens or cows running wild; but there is an abundance of dogs on your average city street. This form of meat consumption reduced stray dog numbers while also feeding poor people that couldn't afford duck, chicken or beef.

During times of hardship people have always sought out other sources of food and protein. Dog meat consumption reached a peak during WWII as Chinese supply lines and resources had been cut by Japanese/Axis forces. This led many Chinese people to begin consuming dog meat simply to stay alive. Naturally, some younger citizens and children were raised eating it and acquired a taste for it and enjoyed it as adults when China’s economy recovered. This is one of the biggest reasons why it persists today.

I am in no way criticizing the Chinese for this practice, as other answers have stated, every culture has its own norms when it comes to food consumption. In many parts of the world, they think Americans are insane for eating gizzards, livers or chitterlings (or chit’lins if you’re a southerner like myself). I think consuming dogs as food is a viable option when more accepted meat sources become scare or expensive, I might even do the same if I fell on hard times or became homeless. This is one of the times I’m glad to be a cat person. Our cultural affinity to the dog as a companion prevents most American and Westerners from turning to dogs as a source of food. That is largely because of the abundance of food in America and the fact that most Westerners have never really experienced a shortage, massive inflation, rationing or scarcity of food.

The one aspect of this practice I don’t condone is how the Chinese (and Japanese and Koreans) use dogs as live bait for shark fishing. This is not because I care for animals (although I do) it is because it hurts the dogs and leads to tremendous suffering; at least when they consume them for food it is over quick and (generally) they don't suffer. When shark fishing with dogs, Chinese fisherman literally put a meat hook through a dog’s mouth and snout and use it as live bait for sharks which I think is a barbaric practice and should be abolished. The pictures are horrific and give you an idea of how little regard some people have for the lives of animals, consider yourself thankful I chose not to add some of those pictures as they would truly haunt you. I don't care how culturally important/traditional Shark Fin soup is, it is not worth using a dog in place of a shrimp or fish. There are so many other ways to catch sharks, this is in no way the most efficient or practical way to land a big catch. But this practice is also becoming less common as Shark Fin Soup has been banned in many parts of China.

Simply because dogs are edible.

Pigs and dogs are very similar on the intelligence scale, but we (westerners) have decided one is suitable for food and one is not because of culture, dogs’ function as a helper, and because we consider them too adorable to eat.

This is a luxury, that we can designate animals as food and non-food, that we can keep around pets that do nothing but cost money and provide companionship. China is only recently coming into a level of prosperity where people can afford to do this. During the lifetime of people still around today (~1960) there was a famine in China that claimed the lives of 15–30 million people. They died of starvation, and don't think for one second they didn't eat everything available before they did. When you are dying of hunger, it doesn't matter if the animal you're eating is cute and cuddly, it's food. Before the famine may not have been as desperate, but pragmatism would have still been required.

People eat dog because they've eaten it and have family recipes from when it was a necessity. With the increase of affluence this may die out (younger generations already protest the consumption of cuddly critters) but it will do so slowly, and on China’s own time.

Why would anybody eat anything?

Humans have started eating animals around them from probably as long as the Human history itself. You eat to satisfy your hunger and you eat what ever satisfies your hunger.

Coming back to Do people in China eat Dog meat? Well, Yes. They also eat Fruits, they also eat vegetables and they eat a lot of other stuff as well. There are a few areas in china where people do eat Dog meat, but that’s a very small population. This also has been done historically in all the other countries as well.

The Yulin Dog festival is definitely notorious around the world.

If you’re one of those persons who keeps saying dog eating is wrong, well, Yeah, eating a dog is wrong. So is eating chicken, beef, duck or anything for that matter. But, you don’t see anybody complaining why people eat chicken!

As a vegetarian, I don’t understand why people who eat other forms of meat have such a negative view upon those who eat a particular form of meat? If you want to criticize those who eat dog meat, then go ahead and criticize those who eat beef or mutton or any other meat out there, as well. Until then, it's quite pointless and honestly hypocritical.

I'm from Hong Kong, the so called foreigner in China and Chinese in foreign countries. I guess I should clarify that your question should not aim at all the Chinese cuz eating dogs is not specific to the Chinese. In fact a lot of primal tribes in different parts of the world today that eat whatever they can eat, just for survival .

Actually, there is no particular reason for that, I'd rather say it's just a personal preference. To be fair, only a certain amount of people living in some speficic provinces do that, while some just don't. I think eating dogs in HK is illegal and you can end up in jail for mistreating animals. I personally dislike the act of eating dogs, and I swear that cooked dog meat can be something that you might never wanna see/smell at.

Any country, or more precisely, anyone has their own preference for food. Speaking of unusual food, Id also like to know why some people eat snails too… But you get me, it all comes down to preference and a bit of cultural influence after all.
